(Aurangabad city is situated in northeastern India at the junction of National Highway 02 (Grand Trunk Road) and National Highway 98. The nearest major city is Bodh Gaya, located 70 kilometers (43 miles) to the west. Patna, the capital of Bihar, lies 140 kilometers (87 miles) to the northeast.
The city covers an area of 3,389 square kilometers (1,309 square miles).
Aurangabad city is nestled on an alluvial plain along the banks of the Adri River. The major Son River flows 20 kilometers (12 miles) to the west. Rivers such as the Punpun, Auranga, Batane, Morhar, and Madar also flow through the Aurangabad district.
Aurangabad is sometimes referred to as the "Chittorgarh of Bihar" due to its significant population of Suryavanshi Rajputs. Since the first general election in 1952, Aurangabad has consistently elected Rajput representatives. Other families or dynasties associated with the region include the Mauryas, Guptas, and Gaharwals (locally known in Bihar as 'Garhwal' or 'Gaharwal').
In ancient times, Aurangabad was part of the Magadha Mahajanapada (1200–322 BCE). Ancient rulers of the city included Bimbisara (late 5th century BCE), Ajatashatru (early 4th century BCE), Chandragupta Maurya (321–298 BCE), and Ashoka (268–232 BCE).
During the reign of Sher Shah Suri (1486–1545 CE), Aurangabad gained strategic importance as part of the Rohtas *Sarkar* (district). Following Sher Shah Suri's death, Aurangabad came under the rule of Akbar. An Afghan rebellion in the region was suppressed by Todar Mal. Some remnants of Afghan architecture still exist.
Following the decline of the Mughal Empire, Aurangabad was ruled by *zamindars* (landlords). These included the wealthy *zamindars* of Deo, Kutumba, Mali, Pawai, Chandragarh, and Siris. The *zamindars* opposed British rule; for instance, Fateh Narayan Singh of Deo—a descendant of Shakti Singh—supported Kunwar Singh against the British.
In 1865, the Bihar district was separated from the Patna district, and Aurangabad was designated as a sub-division of the Bihar district. Statement was the first Sub-Divisional Officer of the Aurangabad sub-division. The first Member of Parliament from this district was Satyendra Narayan Singh (popularly known as 'Chhote Saheb'), a former Chief Minister of the undivided Bihar.
Aurangabad district in Bihar was formally constituted on January 26, 1973 (Government Notification No. 07/11-2071-72, dated January 19, 1973). K.A.H. Subramaniam served as the first District Magistrate, and Surjit Kumar Saha as the Sub-Divisional Officer.
