Bhagalpur (its official and Romanized name), historically known as Champa Nagari, is a city in the Indian state of Bihar, situated on the southern bank of the Ganges River. It is the third-largest city in Bihar by population and serves as the headquarters for the Bhagalpur district, the Bhagalpur Division, and the Eastern Range. Known as the 'Silk City,' it has also been selected for development under the Government of India's 'Smart Cities Mission.' After the capital, Patna, it is the only district in Bihar to host three major higher education institutions: IIIT Bhagalpur, TMBU, and the Agricultural University (BAU). The Vikramshila Central University is currently being constructed near the ruins of the medieval Vikramshila Mahavihara. The city is served by the Bhagalpur Railway Station. India's national aquatic animal, the 'Ganges River Dolphin,' is found in the river near the city, and the 'Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary' has been established in the vicinity. A Brief History of the District
Bhagalpur district is situated in the central part of the Bhagalpur Division. The city of Bhagalpur serves as the headquarters for the Bhagalpur Division, the district, and the Sadar subdivision. The district comprises three subdivisions: Naugachia, Bhagalpur Sadar, and Kahalgaon. There are 16 Community Development (C.D.) blocks in the district. The district contains 1,515 villages and four statutory towns. In its present form, Bhagalpur district was part of the southeastern region of the Bihar *Subah* (province) during the Mughal era. When the East India Company acquired the *Diwani* rights for Bihar, Bengal, and Odisha in 1765, the district encompassed a vast area east of the Munger administration; with the exception of Pargana Chhai, the entire region lay south of the Ganges. This area included Munger, which was separated in 1832. Santhal Pargana was constituted as a separate district in 1855–56, significantly reducing the area of the district situated along the Ganges. In 1954, the entire region north of the Ganges—excluding the Bihpur, Naugachia, and Gopalpur police stations—was merged into the newly formed Saharsa district. In 1991, the Banka subdivision was upgraded to the status of a separate district. Bhagalpur, in its current form, consists of three subdivisions—Bhagalpur Sadar, Naugachia, and Kahalgaon—comprising 16 Community Development Blocks-cum-Anchals. There is no authentic record regarding the origin of the name 'Bhagalpur'. The *Bengal District Gazetteers: Bhagalpur (1911)* correctly notes that the boundaries of Bhagalpur district are entirely artificial; consequently, it is impossible to provide a systematic account of the specific region that now bears this name. However, according to the Bhagalpur District Gazetteer (1962), Buchanan noted in his diary that this name was given by Mughal officials. These officials gathered numerous fugitives and protected them from the violence and plunder perpetrated by unruly chieftains in the interior regions of the plains.
Early History
According to traditions found in the epics and Puranas, the descendants of Anu—the great-grandson of Manu—established the kingdom of Anava in the east. Later, this kingdom was divided among the five sons of King Bali: Anga, Vanga, Kalinga, Pundra, and Sumha. Among the kings of Anga mentioned in historical records is Lomapada, a contemporary and friend of King Dasharatha of Ayodhya. His great-grandson was Champa; the capital of Anga—previously known as Malini—was renamed Champa in his honor. Anga and Magadha are first mentioned in Vedic literature within the Atharvaveda Samhita. Buddhist texts also cite Anga among the various kingdoms of northern India. According to one tradition, King Brahmadatta of Anga defeated King Bhattiya of Magadha. However, Bhattiya's son Bimbisara (c. 545 BCE) avenged his father's defeat and brought Anga under his dominion. It is said that Ajatashatru, the subsequent king of Magadha, shifted his capital to Champa. Ashoka's mother, Subhadrangi, was a poor Brahmin girl from Champa who married Bindusara. Anga remained part of the Magadha Empire under the Nanda, Mauryan (324–185 BCE), Shunga (185–75 BCE), and Kanva (75–30 BCE) dynasties. During the reign of the Kanvas, King Kharavela of Kalinga invaded Magadha and Anga. The history of the subsequent centuries, leading up to the coronation of Chandragupta I (in 320 CE), remains largely obscure. Anga was part of the great Gupta Empire (320–455 CE). This era was marked by immense material and cultural progress. Following the decline of the Gupta dynasty, the Gauda King Shashanka captured this region in 602 CE and ruled until his death in 625 CE. With his death, Gauda power collapsed, and the region subsequently came under the sphere of influence of Harsha, who appointed Madhava Gupta as the King of Magadha. An inscription belonging to his son, Adityasena, has been discovered on Mandar Hill; it reveals that he commissioned the construction of the Narasimha (or Narahari) temple. During his travels, Hiuen Tsang...)
