(Banka district is situated in the far south-eastern part of Bihar state. Its eastern and southern borders adjoin the Godda district of Jharkhand state. To the west and north-east, it is bordered by the Jamui and Munger districts, respectively. The erstwhile Bhagalpur district lies to the north of Banka.
The geographical area of the district is 305,621 hectares, or 3,019.3465 square kilometers.
The headquarters of Banka district is located in Banka town. The district was established on February 21, 1991; prior to this, it was a sub-division of the Bhagalpur district.
The district comprises 11 blocks and two towns—Banka and Amarpur.
Amarpur, Banka, Barahat, Belhar, Bounsi, Chandan, Dhoraiya, Fullidumar, Katoria, Rajaun, and Shambhuganj.
The district is distinguished by 'Mandar Hill' (Mandar Parvat), located in the Bounsi block approximately 18 km from the district headquarters; it has been renowned for its uniqueness since ancient times.
The famous 'Bounsi Mela' (fair) is held here every year in January. Starting on January 14th (Makar Sankranti), the fair continues for a month. Mandar Hill is associated with a legend from the ancient *Skanda Purana*.
Natural Features:-
The district shares its border with Jharkhand state; consequently, its geographical terrain (natural landscape) resembles that of Jharkhand. The Chandan is the principal river here.
The Chandan River is the largest among the hilly streams in the district. It originates just north of Deoghar in Jharkhand state. It flows past Banka and merges into the Ganges River at Ghogha (in Bhagalpur district). The Chandan River Project facilitates irrigation for a large part of Banka district. The northern part of Banka is generally flat, except for the southern region which borders the Santhal Pargana (Jharkhand). The terrain begins to rise gradually near or beyond Banka and Barahat, marking the start of hilly areas to the south of Banka; consequently, 60% of the district is hilly.

(Early History
This district possesses a rich heritage and shares a deep connection with its parent district, Bhagalpur, from which it was separated following the 1991 census. Consequently, the history of Banka district is best understood through the history of Bhagalpur district. According to traditions found in the epics and Puranas, the descendants of Anu—the great-grandson of Manu—established the Anava kingdom in the east. Later, this kingdom was divided among the five sons of King Bali: Anga, Vanga, Kalinga, Pundra, and Sumha. Among the kings of Anga mentioned in historical records is Lomapada, a contemporary and friend of King Dasharatha of Ayodhya. His great-grandson was Champa, after whom the capital of Anga was renamed Champa (it was previously known as Malini). Anga, along with Magadha, is first mentioned in the Atharvaveda Samhita of Vedic literature. Buddhist texts also mention Anga among the various kingdoms of northern India. According to one tradition, King Brahmadatta of Anga defeated King Bhatti of Magadha; however, Bhatti's son Bimbisara (c. 545 BCE) later avenged his father's defeat and brought Anga under his dominion. It is said that Ajatashatru, the subsequent king of Magadha, shifted his capital to Champa. Ashoka's mother, Subhadrangi, was a poor Brahmin girl from Champa who married Bindusara. Anga remained part of the Magadha Empire during the reigns of the Nanda, Mauryan (324–185 BCE), Shunga (185–75 BCE), and Kanva (75–30 BCE) dynasties. During the Kanva reign, King Kharavela of Kalinga invaded Magadha and Anga. The history of the subsequent centuries, leading up to the coronation of Chandragupta I (320 CE), remains quite obscure. Anga was part of the great Gupta Empire (320–455 CE), an era marked by immense material and cultural progress. Following the decline of the Gupta dynasty, the Gauda King Shashanka captured the region in 602 CE and ruled until his death in 625 CE. His death led to the collapse of Gauda power, and the region subsequently came under the sphere of influence of Harsha, who appointed Madhava Gupta as the King of Magadha. An inscription belonging to his son, Adityasena, has been discovered on Mandar Hill, revealing that he commissioned the construction of the Narasimha (or Narahari) temple. Hiuen Tsang visited Champa during his travels and described the city in his travelogue. The rule of the Pala dynasty in Bengal began in 755 CE with the election of Gopala as king; he conquered Bihar and was succeeded by Dharmapala. Vigrahapala established his authority over Anga, and a copper plate bearing the name of his son, Narayanapala, has been found in Bhagalpur. The renowned Vikramshila University was founded by Gopala. Following the decline of the Pala dynasty, the Sena dynasty also ruled over Anga.)
(The movement of 1857 did not have a major impact on Bhagalpur, which included the present-day Banka district. Upon receiving news of the mutiny in Dinapur and Munger, Mr. Yule, the then Commissioner, intercepted a detachment of 100 European soldiers from the 5th Fusiliers and stationed them in Bhagalpur. At that time, the 5th Irregulars were stationed in Bhagalpur, while the 32nd Native Infantry was stationed at Bausi. The former troops mutinied on August 14 and marched towards Rohini to join a detachment of their regiment stationed there. The combined force marched to Bausi, but the Colonel of the 32nd Native Infantry had already been warned and succeeded in preventing his men from joining the mutineers. Subsequently, they proceeded towards Deoghar. Although the 32nd Native Infantry did not initially rise against the British, they mutinied on October 9 and killed Lieutenant Cooper and Assistant Commissioner Mr. Ronald. This mutiny was short-lived, and the rebels soon voluntarily laid down their arms. Banka district played a significant role in the country's struggle for independence. In the first decade of the century, it was influenced by the Swadeshi movement. Magazines advocating the Swadeshi cause, originating from Calcutta, enjoyed wide circulation in the Bhagalpur region, which included Banka district. During the early days of the Indian freedom struggle led by Gandhiji, there was effective public participation in the movement to boycott foreign cloth. A student movement emerged in the following decade, and Banka participated in it with great enthusiasm; some of its annual conferences were held in Bhagalpur. Banka responded substantially to Gandhiji's call during the Non-Cooperation and Civil Disobedience movements. The police took possession of the Congress office, the Khadi depot, and the Charkha Sangh. More than 1,600 people were arrested in the district in 1930. Following the arrest of national leaders in 1942, a large number of meetings were held and processions were taken out. The district played a pivotal role in the events that followed, continuing right up to the country's independence.)
