(Ara city (also known as Arrah) serves as the administrative headquarters of this district. Bhojpur district was formed in 1972; prior to this, it was part of the Shahabad district.
In 1972, the Shahabad district was bifurcated into two districts: Bhojpur and Rohtas. At that time, Buxar was a subdivision of the erstwhile Bhojpur district. Buxar became a separate district in 1992, and currently, Bhojpur district comprises three subdivisions: Ara Sadar, Jagdishpur, and Piro. It shares its northwestern border with Uttar Pradesh.
Bhojpur district was established in 1972, having previously been part of the old Shahabad district. In 1972, Shahabad district was split into two parts—Bhojpur and Rohtas. Buxar was a subdivision of the original Bhojpur district before becoming a separate district in 1992; the district now consists of three subdivisions: Ara Sadar, Jagdishpur, and Piro. Ara city is the headquarters and principal city of the district. The district is bordered by Saran (Bihar) and the Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh to the north; Rohtas district to the south; Buxar district to the west; and the districts of Patna, Jehanabad, and Arwal to the east.
Bhojpur district shares a deep connection with its parent district, Shahabad, which possesses a long and fascinating history. Evidence of human settlement in this region dates back to prehistoric times. The 1961 Census report for Shahabad describes the district's history as follows:
It is said that the name of the district's current headquarters, 'Ara' (or Arrah), is derived from the Sanskrit word 'Aranya', meaning 'forest'. This suggests that in ancient times, the entire area surrounding modern-day Ara was covered by dense forests. According to mythology, the ashram of Sage Vishvamitra—Lord Ram's guru—was located somewhere in this area.)
(“The famous Chinese traveler Hiuen Tsang, who visited India in the 7th century AD, visited the place known as ‘Mo-Ho-Solo’ in Shahabad. This site has been identified as the modern-day village of Masarh, located 10 kilometers west of Ara on the Ara-Buxar road. The Chinese traveler observed that the inhabitants were Brahmins who did not follow the teachings of the Buddha; consequently, disappointed by this, he did not visit any other part of the district.”
“Little is known about the history of the district following the decline of the Gupta dynasty. It is highly probable that the region reverted to the control of indigenous tribes and minor chieftains. During this period, the Cheros emerged as the dominant power, ruling over the greater part of the district. Subsequently, Rajputs arrived from Ujjain in the Malwa region. King Bhoj was their ruler, and the area is named ‘Bhojpur’ in his honor.”
The medieval history of the district is described as follows:
“In 1529, following his victory over the Afghan rulers, Babur—who was encamped at Ara—proclaimed his sovereignty over Bihar. To commemorate this event, the place was named ‘Shahabad,’ which literally means ‘City of the Emperor.’ Later, this name was applied to the *Sarkar* (administrative unit) that included Ara, and eventually, it came to designate the entire district.” “After ascending the throne, Akbar incorporated the Shahabad district into his empire, although his control over the area was not very firm. Akbar’s commander, Man Singh, attempted to streamline the district's revenue administration, but local chieftains continued to resist. The Rajas of Jagdishpur and Bhojpur opposed the Mughals; the Raja of Bhojpur even rebelled against Jahangir. His successor, Raja Pratap, was killed on Shah Jahan's orders, and the queen was forced to marry a Muslim courtier. This marked the eventual end of the Bhojpur family, though sporadic unrest persisted until the final days of Mughal rule.”
Thereafter, the district’s history remained relatively uneventful until 1857, when Kunwar Singh joined the rebels and rose up against the British.)
