(About the District
The present-day Buxar district was formed by combining the Buxar Sadar and Dumraon subdivisions of the erstwhile Bhojpur district and came into existence in 1991. Buxar city serves as the district headquarters and the main urban center. The district is bordered by Ballia district (Uttar Pradesh) to the north, Rohtas district to the south, Ghazipur and Ballia districts (Uttar Pradesh) to the west, and Bhojpur district to the east.
History
Buxar district shares a deep connection with its parent district, Bhojpur, and possesses a long and fascinating history.
Since ancient times, Buxar has been a dwelling place for great sages; according to the Puranas, it was a battlefield between gods and demons, and in modern history, it became a site of conflict between foreign invaders and the local populace. Archaeological excavations have linked Buxar to the ancient civilizations of Mohenjo-daro and Harappa. In ancient times, the place was known by various names such as "Siddhashram," "Vedgarbhapuri," "Karush," "Tapovan," "Chaitrath," "Vyaghrasar," and "Buxar." Buxar's history predates the Ramayana era. It is said that the word 'Buxar' is derived from 'Vyaghrasar.' Sage Vedashira’s face had transformed into that of a tiger due to a curse by Sage Durvasa but was restored after he bathed in a sacred pond; subsequently, that pond came to be known as 'Vyaghrasar.'
According to mythology, the sacred ashram of Sage Vishwamitra—the family preceptor of Lord Rama—and eighty thousand sages was situated on the banks of the holy Ganges River, within the territory of present-day Buxar district. Demons had disrupted their *Yajna* (ritual sacrifice). It is believed that the site where Lord Rama slew the notorious demoness Tadaka lies within the area of present-day Buxar city. Furthermore, Lord Rama and his younger brother Lakshmana received their education in Buxar. It is also said that Sage Gautam's wife, Ahilya, regained her human form after shedding her stone guise and attained salvation simply by the touch of Lord Rama's feet. This place is known today as 'Ahirauli' and is situated six kilometers from Buxar town. 'Kanvardah Pokhara'—also known as 'Vyaghrasar'—is currently a tourist attraction. References to Buxar's ancient significance are found in ancient texts such as the *Brahma Purana* and the *Varaha Purana*:
During the Mughal era, in 1539 AD, a historic battle took place at Chausa between Humayun and Sher Shah. On June 23, 1764, on the plains of Katkauli—located about 6 kilometers from Buxar town—the British army, led by Sir Hector Munro, defeated the combined forces of Mir Qasim, Shuja-ud-Daulah, and Shah Alam II. A stone monument erected by the British at Katkauli still stands today as a testament to that battle.)
