(Patna is the largest city and the administrative headquarters of both the Patna Division and the Patna district in the state of Bihar. It serves as the capital of Bihar and is situated on the southern bank of the Ganges River. The city is well-connected by rail and road networks. While it is primarily an administrative and educational hub for Bihar, it also boasts several ancient sacred sites and tourist attractions.
Paddy is the principal crop of the district, cultivated on more than one-third of the total sown area. Other significant crops grown here include maize, pulses, and wheat. Non-food crops consist mainly of oilseeds; cash crops such as vegetables and watermelons are also cultivated in the *Diyara* belt.
History
The history and heritage of Patna date back to the dawn of civilization. Historically, the city was known as Pataliputra or Patalipattan as early as 600 BCE. Over time, its name evolved through various forms—such as Pataligram, Kusumpur, and Azimabad—before becoming known as Patna in the modern era. Chandragupta Maurya established his capital here in the 4th century BCE. Although the city's prominence subsequently declined, it regained significance in the 16th century under the reign of Sher Shah Suri. According to another theory, modern-day Patna originated from a village named 'Pattan'. It is said that Ajatashatru founded Pataliputra; the name was formed by combining 'Pattan' with the ancient village of 'Patali'. Greek historical records mention 'Patalibothra', which is believed to refer to Pataliputra.
Ajatashatru implemented extensive security measures to protect the city from the persistent invasions of the Licchavis. He recognized that the city's location—surrounded by rivers on three sides—provided a natural defensive barrier akin to a riverine fortress. Ajatashatru's son shifted the capital from Rajgriha to Patna, a status that was maintained throughout the Mauryan and Gupta periods. Emperor Ashoka also ruled from this city. This city served as the capital for mighty rulers such as Chandragupta Maurya and Samudragupta. It was from here that Chandragupta dispatched his army to the western frontier to confront the Greeks, and where Chandragupta Vikramaditya repelled the Shakas and Hunas. The Greek ambassador Megasthenes resided here during the reign of Chandragupta. Renowned travelers like Fa-Hien (3rd century CE) and Xuanzang (7th century CE) visited the city and wrote extensively about the lifestyle and administrative systems of those eras. Scholars like Kautilya lived here and authored seminal works such as the *Arthashastra*. Since ancient times, the city has been renowned as a center of knowledge and scholarship.
In 1703 CE, Prince Azim-us-Shan, the grandson of Aurangzeb, was appointed Governor of Patna. Prior to this, Sher Shah had shifted his capital from Bihar Sharif to Patna. Prince Azim-us-Shan endeavored to transform Patna into a modern, beautiful city and renamed it Azimabad. However, it remained popularly known as Patna among the common people, and the ruins of the walls that once enclosed the old city can still be seen near Patna Sahib today.)
