बेगूसराय शहर, भारत के बिहार राज्य के 38 ज़िलों में से एक, बेगूसराय ज़िले का प्रशासनिक मुख्यालय है। यह ज़िला गंगा नदी के उत्तरी किनारे पर स्थित है। इसकी स्थिति 25.15N और 25.45N अक्षांश तथा 85.45E और 86.36E देशांतर के बीच है। इसे 1870 में मुंगेर ज़िले के एक सब-डिविज़न के तौर पर बनाया गया था। 1972 में इसे एक ज़िला बनाया गया। माना जाता है कि ज़िले का नाम "बेगम" (रानी) और "सराय" (धर्मशाला) से मिलकर बना है, क्योंकि भागलपुर की "बेगम" गंगा किनारे स्थित पवित्र स्थान "सिमरिया घाट" पर एक महीने की तीर्थयात्रा के लिए आती थीं; बाद में यही नाम बोलचाल की भाषा में "बेगूसराय" बन गया।
यह मशहूर हिंदी कवि 'राष्ट्रकवि' रामधारी सिंह दिनकर (हालांकि ज़्यादातर लोग मुंगेर को ही उनकी जन्मस्थली मानते हैं, क्योंकि उनके जन्म और जीवन के एक बड़े हिस्से के दौरान बेगूसराय मुंगेर का ही हिस्सा था) और जाने-माने इतिहासकार प्रोफ़ेसर राम शरण शर्मा की जन्मस्थली है। बेगूसराय ऐतिहासिक मिथिला क्षेत्र का हिस्सा है। मशहूर इतिहासकार प्रोफ़ेसर राम शरण शर्मा का जन्म 26 नवंबर 1919 को बरौनी, बेगूसराय, बिहार में हुआ था। श्री राजेंद्र प्रसाद सिंह (जिन्हें UNICEF और इंदिरा गांधी से सर्वश्रेष्ठ किसान और समाज सेवक का पुरस्कार मिला था) का जन्म हर्रख गाँव (बेगूसराय) में हुआ था। यहाँ घूमने लायक जगहों में जय मंगला मंदिर, नौलखा मंदिर और काबर झील शामिल हैं।
बेगूसराय की अर्थव्यवस्था मुख्य रूप से खेती पर आधारित है। इस ज़िले की आबादी का एक बड़ा हिस्सा खेती-बाड़ी से जुड़े कामों में लगा हुआ है। खरीफ़, धान, उड़द, अरहर, मसूर, रबी, गेहूँ, मक्का, चना, मटर, तीसी, सरसों और सूरजमुखी यहाँ की मुख्य फ़सलें हैं। इसके अलावा, तिलहन, तंबाकू, जूट, आलू, टमाटर, अरंडी और लाल मिर्च यहाँ की मुख्य नकदी फ़सलें हैं। हाल ही में बेगूसराय में अमरूद, आम और लीची जैसे फलों की खेती भी विकसित हुई है। साथ ही, ज़िले में कई सहायक उद्योग भी मौजूद हैं। अभी बेगूसराय में इंडियन ऑयल कॉर्पोरेशन लिमिटेड (IOCL), बरौनी थर्मल पावर स्टेशन (BTPS) और बरौनी सुधा डेयरी मुख्य उद्योग हैं।

(Begusarai city serves as the administrative headquarters of the Begusarai district, one of the 38 districts in the Indian state of Bihar. The district is situated on the northern bank of the Ganges River. Geographically, it lies between latitudes 25.15°N and 25.45°N and longitudes 85.45°E and 86.36°E. It was originally established as a subdivision of Munger district in 1870 and was constituted as a separate district in 1972. The district's name is believed to be derived from the words "Begum" (Queen) and "Sarai" (inn/rest house); this stems from the fact that a "Begum" from Bhagalpur used to visit "Simaria Ghat"—a holy site on the banks of the Ganges—for a month-long pilgrimage, and this name eventually evolved into "Begusarai" in common parlance.
It is the birthplace of the renowned Hindi poet 'Rashtrakavi' Ramdhari Singh Dinkar (although most people consider Munger his birthplace, as Begusarai was part of Munger during his birth and a significant portion of his life) and the eminent historian Professor Ram Sharan Sharma. Begusarai is part of the historic Mithila region. Professor Ram Sharan Sharma was born on November 26, 1919, in Barauni, Begusarai, Bihar. Shri Rajendra Prasad Singh (who received the 'Best Farmer and Social Worker' award from UNICEF and Indira Gandhi) was born in Harrakh village, Begusarai. Notable places to visit in the area include the Jai Mangala Temple, Naulakha Temple, and Kabar Lake.
The economy of Begusarai is primarily agrarian. A large section of the district's population is engaged in agricultural activities. Key crops grown here include Kharif crops (such as paddy, urad, arhar, and masoor) and Rabi crops (such as wheat, maize, gram, peas, linseed, mustard, and sunflower). Additionally, oilseeds, tobacco, jute, potatoes, tomatoes, castor, and red chillies are the major cash crops here. Recently, the cultivation of fruits such as guava, mango, and litchi has also developed in Begusarai. The district is also home to several ancillary industries. Currently, the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Barauni Thermal Power Station (BTPS), and Barauni Sudha Dairy are the key industries in Begusarai.
Begusarai is recognized at both national and international levels for its industrial identity. Major industrial establishments here include the Indian Oil Refinery (Barauni), Hindustan Fertilizer Limited (Barauni), the Thermal Power Station (Barauni), and hundreds of small-scale industrial units in the private sector; however, Hindustan Fertilizer Limited (Barauni) is currently on the verge of closure.)
