(Gaya district is one of the 38 districts in the Indian state of Bihar. It was officially established on October 3, 1865. The district shares its southern border with the state of Jharkhand. Gaya city serves as the district headquarters and is also the second-largest city in Bihar.
Gaya is the second-largest city in Bihar and the headquarters of Gaya district. It is located 100 kilometers south of Patna, the state capital. This ancient city is situated on the banks of the Phalgu River (referred to as the Niranjana in the Ramayana). The place is considered sacred by Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains. The city is surrounded on three sides by small rocky hills (Mangla-Gauri, Shring-Sthan, Ram-Shila, and Brahmayoni), while the river flows along the fourth (eastern) side. The city derives its name from the mythological demon 'Gayasura' (literally meaning 'Demon Gaya').
Gaya came under British control following the Battle of Buxar in 1764. Like the rest of the country, Gaya gained independence in 1947. Until 1864, the area was part of the Bihar and Ramgarh districts. It was granted the status of an independent district in 1865. In 1976, the Aurangabad and Nawada districts were carved out of the original Gaya district.
Subsequently, in May 1981, the Bihar state government formed the Magadh Division by combining the Gaya, Nawada, Aurangabad, and Jahanabad districts. When Gaya district was originally formed in 1865, all these districts existed merely as sub-divisions.
History
Gaya finds mention in the Hindu epics Ramayana and Mahabharata. It is said that Rama, accompanied by Sita and Lakshmana, visited Gaya to perform the *Pind Daan* (ritual offering for ancestors) for his father, Dasharatha. In the Mahabharata, the place is referred to as Gayapuri. The Vayu Purana states that Gaya was the name of an *Asura* (demon) whose body became sanctified after he performed rigorous penance and received a boon from Lord Vishnu. It was decreed that Gayasura's body would henceforth be known as the 'Gaya Kshetra' (the sacred region of Gaya).
Gaya has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous dynasties in the Magadha region. From the 6th century BCE to the 18th century CE—a span of approximately 2,300 to 2,400 years—Gaya has held a significant place in the region's cultural history. This legacy began with the Shishunaga dynasty, founded by Shishunaga, who ruled over Patna and Gaya around 600 BCE. Bimbisara, the fifth ruler in this lineage—who lived and reigned around 519 BCE—introduced Gaya to the outside world. During Bimbisara's reign, the region came under the influence of Gautama Buddha and Mahavira. Following the brief rule of the Nanda dynasty, Gaya and the entire Magadha region came under Mauryan rule after Ashoka (272 BCE – 232 BCE) embraced Buddhism. He visited Gaya and commissioned the construction of the first temple at Bodh Gaya to commemorate the attainment of supreme enlightenment by Prince Gautama.
An era of Hindu revival began with the advent of the Gupta dynasty in the 4th and 5th centuries CE. Samudragupta of Magadha played a key role in bringing Gaya into prominence. During the Gupta Empire, it served as the headquarters of the district.
Subsequently, Gaya came under the rule of the Pala Empire, founded by Gopala. It is believed that the current temple at Bodh Gaya was constructed during the reign of Gopala's son, Dharmapala.
In the 12th century, Muhammad Bakhtiyar Khilji invaded Gaya. Following the Battle of Buxar in 1764, the region eventually came under British control. Like the rest of the country, the Gaya district gained independence in 1947. Gaya is also the birthplace of the renowned nationalist and Bihar's first Deputy Chief Minister, Dr. Anugrah Narayan Sinha. Until 1864, it was part of the Gaya, Bihar, and Ramgarh districts. It was granted the status of an independent district in 1865. Subsequently, in May 1981, the Bihar state government formed the Magadh Division by combining the districts of Gaya, Nawada, Aurangabad, and Jehanabad. When the Gaya district was established in 1865, all these districts existed merely at the sub-divisional level.
Three districts have been carved out of the Gaya region: Aurangabad and Nawada in 1976, and Jehanabad in 1988.)
