(In 1845, Nawada was established as a subdivision of the Gaya district. It became a separate district on January 26, 1973. The name "Nawada" is believed to be derived from "Nau-Abad," meaning "new town"; it was also formerly known as "Elliot Market." The district is divided into two parts by the Khuri River: the older section lies on the left bank, while the more modern area—housing government offices and amenities—is situated on the right bank.
The Sarvodaya Ashram in Nawada, inaugurated by Dr. Rajendra Prasad and promoted by Jayaprakash Narayan, is a significant site contributing to the district's historical importance.
Nawada is part of the ancient Magadha kingdom located in southern Bihar. The name 'Nawada' originates from the Persian word 'Nau-Abad,' meaning "new town"; it was previously known as 'Elliot Market.' Before coming under East India Company rule, Nawada was governed by the semi-independent kings of Hisua, belonging to a Muslim 'Mai' dynasty. Following the takeover, the region experienced considerable disorder until 1845, when it became the headquarters of a newly formed subdivision. Chaos erupted again during the 1857 uprising when marauding gangs seized control of Nawada. Local offices were destroyed, but government records were saved by local officials who hid them in a cave on a nearby hill; these remain the only available public records from the pre-1857 era in the district. Two miles to the north, west of the public road, a Jain temple stands in the middle of a large water tank; however, the town lacks significant buildings and holds little historical interest. The town is home to one of the two Satyagraha Ashrams in the country established by Gandhiji. This was also the birthplace and center of activity for Indrabhuti Gautam, the chief disciple of Lord Mahavira in Jainism. This modern city is located just 40 kilometers away from Nalanda University, the world's oldest university.
Nawada is the southernmost district of Bihar and shares its border with the state of Jharkhand. While all other districts in Bihar have witnessed development over the past few years, Nawada is still struggling to meet basic needs. Corruption is a major issue in the district. The city suffers from rampant encroachment, and government officials are doing little to keep it clean and free from encroachment.)
